Douglas Bader lost both legs in a flying accident one below and one above the knee. He refused to use even a cane to walk. He fought to get back in the RAF at the start of WWII, became a Wing Commander. He was shot down over France and taken prisoner. After he got both legs, one was lost as he bailed out, he escaped from the Prison Hospital. The Germans threatened to take away his legs if he did it again. He ended up in Colditz Castle, the POW camp for "troublemakers." The prisoners were building a glider in the attic for him to fly out in an escape attempt when they were liberated. He became a leader for disabled rights in the UK after the war.
